Canning Stock Route Experience
Seventeen days on Australia’s most remote and demanding 4WD track, driving your own vehicle with an expert guide out front, a tag-along format where you drive and he leads.
Tell us your trip details and we'll put together a complimentary Stradora Expedition Pack for the journey.
23 nights through Australia
The first night is at Yulara, with dinner at Ayers Rock Resort. Then you head west on the Great Central Road, through Warakurna and Warburton, camping at the roadhouses. At Giles Meteorological Station you watch the weather balloon go up. Past Tjukayirla and Leonora, you fill up for the last time at Wiluna.
From there you drive north up the Canning Stock Route, and everything slows down. The track runs past historic well sites, through desert oak forest and spinifex grassland, and over dune crossings that the guide coordinates with oncoming traffic by radio. Heavy corrugations and tight scrub make for slow, physical driving.
Rest stops
There are two places to stop for longer on the way. Durba Springs and Well 33 at Kunawarritji each give you two nights off the road before the next stretch. Evenings bring night spotlighting sessions, with animal and bird ID books to hand.
You leave the Canning at Billiluna Community and turn east onto the Tanami Track for the long run into Alice Springs. The last night is at the Desert Palms, with a final dinner at Hanuman at the Hilton.
How it works
This is a tag-along tour in your own vehicle. Tony, a full-time guide and 4WD instructor, leads every tour in a Land Cruiser carrying recovery gear, Starlink and a Garmin inReach. The 2027 trip makes an even dozen on the Canning for Tony.
Groups are limited to seven vehicles, with no trailers and no children under 16. The price is for up to two people in one vehicle. Camping fees, national park fees and Aboriginal land permits are arranged for you. Fuel, most food and camping gear are yours to bring. If you are flying in, the operator recommends Bivouac Adventures or All Star 4WD Camper Hire.
Is it for you?
The operator puts it plainly: “This tour is not a holiday, it’s an experience”. You need a high-clearance 4WD with low range and heavy-duty suspension, six LT-rated tyres, a fuel range of at least 800 km (1,000 km is strongly recommended) and 60 to 100 litres of water, plus a mechanic’s sign-off before you leave. Fitness and resilience matter as much as the vehicle.
