Capitals & Colonies - East Coast Road Trip
Visit Jamestown, the first permanent English colony in America, then Drayton Hall, the only Ashley River plantation house to survive intact – twelve nights across the East Coast’s colonial history.
Tell us your trip details and we'll put together a complimentary Stradora Expedition Pack for the journey.
12 nights through United States
Twelve nights from Washington DC south along the eastern seaboard, self-guided, through the colonial and antebellum history of the coast.
The guiding is what the price buys. A private historian in Washington, a full day with a guide in Charleston, a half day in Savannah and a private tour of Monticello, which is a different proposition from joining the queue at each.
Washington opens it for two nights at the Jefferson, with the memorials and the Library of Congress. Orange follows for a night by way of the Skyline Drive through Shenandoah and Fredericksburg, where four major battles were fought. Monticello and Highland come next, Jefferson’s and Monroe’s estates, both of which now address the enslaved labour that built and ran them, then Richmond for two. Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown follow, the first permanent English settlement in America. Wilmington takes a night, then Charleston for two at Zero George, with the historic district, Drayton Hall and Middleton Place, and naturalist-led kayaking in the harbour. Savannah and Cumberland Island close the route, with its wild beaches and the ruins of the Carnegie estate.
The hire car, the accommodation, all four private guided elements, the kayaking, the Cumberland ferry and its meals and tours, and breakfast in Wilmington and Savannah are included; flights, other meals, gratuities and entrance fees are not. The operator’s page is inconsistent about where the car is dropped off, so that is worth confirming at booking. The price shown is per person sharing. Spring and autumn are the seasons.
