14 nights through Spain
Fourteen nights, self-guided, from the hills above the Bay of Biscay to the volcanic landscape of Catalonia. Caminos describes this as a coast to coast crossing of the Spanish Pyrenees, with hotels, an economy hire car and directions arranged for you.
The route links some of Spain’s most spectacular protected areas: Ordesa and Monte Perdido, Posets-Maladeta, Aiguestortes and the Garrotxa Volcanic Park. In between come eastern Navarra’s gorges and native woodlands and a chain of lovely villages, among them Urdax, Ochagavia, Ainsa, Alquezar and Besalu. Caminos adds that mountain food, cheeses and local wines are part of every stop.
Three nights in north-west Navarra start with the Baztan and Bidasoa valleys, the French Basque villages across the border, San Sebastian and the train up La Rhune. The Irati forest, the Lumbier and Arbayun gorges and Roncesvalles occupy two nights, followed by two in the Tena Valley and Huesca. Three nights around Ordesa, Monte Perdido and the Sierra de Guara include Ainsa and Alquezar. The Val d’Aran, Boi and Aneu take two nights, and Garrotxa Volcanic Park closes the route, with Santa Pau, Besalu and Figueres within reach.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, or Brittany Ferries crossings for travellers bringing their own car, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,800 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 14 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
