12 nights through France

Twelve nights from San Sebastian to Paris, self-guided, arranged entirely around the food, with a train at the end.

The route is a sequence of meals with driving in between, and it is honest about that. San Sebastian alone holds more Michelin stars per head than almost anywhere, and the stops that follow are chosen the same way.

Two nights at the Maria Cristina open it, with the pintxos bars, the market and a hands-on ham and sherry masterclass. Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port follows for a night, reached by Pamplona and Roncesvalles, where Charlemagne’s rearguard was destroyed in 778 and which is now a Camino stop, crossing the Pyrenees by the Valcarlos route. Eugenie-les-Bains comes next for a night at Les Pres d’Eugenie, where Michel Guerard has held three stars for over forty years. Cap Ferret follows for two, the oyster capital of France, with cycling past the lighthouse and the dunes and lunch and dinner at two local institutions. Saint-Emilion closes the driving with two nights, with a tasting at Chateau Siaurac, before the car goes back at Angouleme and the train runs to Paris.

The hire car, the accommodation, daily breakfast, the economy train ticket, the listed sightseeing and guiding, the Siaurac tasting and the three named meals are included; flights, other meals and unlisted excursions are not. The price shown is per person sharing. Spring and autumn are the seasons, since the oyster season and the vineyards both favour them. Thirteen days finishing by rail rather than behind the wheel is a sensible piece of planning, since arriving in Paris in a hire car is nobody’s idea of a holiday.
