10 nights through Spain

Ten nights, self-guided, in a circular tour of Galicia, the Celtic province in Spain’s far north-west. Caminos arranges the hotels and an economy hire car, and notes a modified ferry-drive version for those bringing their own car.

Caminos describes a region a little larger than Wales and ideal for touring, with a taste of everything northern Spain offers but without too much driving. The coast is strung with inlets and sandy beaches, the interior is hiking country, and Galicia is known for Albarino wine, the Ribera Sacra vineyards and some of the best seafood in Europe. History runs through it, from the Roman walls of Lugo to Celtic remains and stately pazos.

Two nights on the Rias Altas and Costa de la Muerte take in Finisterre, the Roman lighthouse at La Coruna and the beach at Carnota. The Rias Baixas follow for two nights, with shellfish, the islands of Cies and Ons, Vigo and the Albarino town of Cambados. In the Ribera Sacra, two nights include a catamaran trip down the Rio Sil, Monforte and the octopus of Ourense. Two nights on the Costa Lucense bring the Playa de los Catedrales, Viveiro and Sargadelos pottery, and two final nights in Santiago de Compostela include a walking tour of the World Heritage city.

The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, or Brittany Ferries crossings for travellers bringing their own car, a guide to Northern Spain and a restaurant guide covering the whole route, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,350 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 10 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
