17 nights through Canada

Seventeen nights split between the train and a motorhome, which is an unusual hybrid and a sensible one: the cities are done by rail, where parking a large vehicle is a nuisance, and the parks are done on wheels.

Quebec City opens it, the only walled city in North America and the best place in Canada to eat. Four VIA Rail legs then carry the trip west: Montreal, then Ottawa for the national museums and galleries, then Kingston at the eastern end of Lake Ontario, then Toronto. Travelling between Canadian cities by train is a considerably more civilised experience than the airport alternative and the St Lawrence corridor is the one route where the service is frequent.

The motorhome is collected in Toronto, and the first outing is a day trip to Niagara including the Voyage to the Falls boat, which goes into the spray at the base of the Horseshoe.

Mont Tremblant National Park follows for camping and campfire s’mores, then Algonquin, where canoeing is the proper way to travel and the interior is reachable only by paddle. Moose, black bear and loon are all common there. Canadian Affair include the flights, the four rail legs, the motorhome and the listed attractions, with campground fees, fuel, insurance and meals separate. The price is per person. For a traveller who wants both the Quebec cities and the Ontario wilderness without compromising on either, this structure solves the problem neatly. Seventeen nights is enough to do it without rushing, and arriving in four city centres by train rather than circling them looking for somewhere to park is reason enough on its own.
