13 nights through Czech Republic

Thirteen nights in a loop from Prague through Bratislava and Vienna and back, kept deliberately low in mileage, with riders flying in to collect a bike or riding down with the group.

Prague opens it with the welcome dinner, then the route follows the Danube to Bratislava, where a day off the bike takes in the castle above the river and a compact pastel old town that can be walked in a morning and then sat in for the rest of the afternoon.

Vienna comes next, still on the Danube, with a UNESCO listed centre, an optional horse and carriage tour, and Schonbrunn, the Habsburg summer palace with over a thousand rooms and gardens to match. The city’s roll call of former residents is hard to beat: Mozart, Beethoven and Freud all worked within a few streets of one another.

Cesky Krumlov follows back in the Czech Republic, a Bohemian town wrapped in a bend of the Vltava around a thirteenth-century Gothic castle, and it is the prettiest overnight on the tour. The return to Prague calls at the Budvar brewery, where the original Budweiser-style lager has been brewed since the 1890s and the name has been in dispute with its American namesake ever since, and offers the Sedlec Ossuary, a chapel decorated with the bones of up to seventy thousand people, most of them victims of the fourteenth-century plague, arranged into chandeliers and coats of arms. It is as unsettling as it sounds. Prague takes the final night and the farewell dinner. Hotels, breakfasts, the welcome and farewell dinners, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person.
