GiroDeluxe: Austrian Tyrol & Italian Dolomites 2027

Six nights through the Austrian Tyrol and the Italian Dolomites, navigational rather than guided, in the guest’s own car, with the price quoted on application.

Three named passes carry this one: the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest road at 2,504 metres over thirty-six hairpins; the Timmelsjoch, which crosses into Italy at 2,509 metres; and the Silvretta, which climbs through the Montafon on a toll road built for a hydro scheme.

More than twenty mountain roads make up the rest, with a night at a five-star Tyrol hotel where guests drive their car directly into the reception hall, which is a detail nobody forgets. The format is the operator’s own: a printed tour booklet, a map, QR codes linking to Google Maps and a preprogrammed satnav, with a lead car to follow for anyone who would rather not navigate, and everyone regrouping at the same hotel each evening.

Six nights in four and five-star hotels with parking, evening meals every night running to three, four and five courses, the tour booklet and the loan of a satnav are all included; fuel, the car, the Eurotunnel crossing, which is available as a supplement, some meals and a single supplement for solo travellers are not. The price is given on application. Late May to October is the window, since the Grossglockner and the Timmelsjoch both close in winter. Seven days with dinner included every night is a well-balanced trip, and the Tyrol and the Dolomites together are the strongest pairing of pass country in Europe.
