Grand Tour America

Six weeks from New York to Los Angeles, the longest trip they sell and the only one that takes in the east coast cities, the Deep South, Texas, the Utah canyons and the Pacific Coast Highway in a single journey. Flights, car and hotels are arranged together from the UK.

The first three weeks will be familiar to anyone who has looked at their New York to New Orleans route, because this is that trip and then some: the eastern cities, Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville, the Smokies, Nashville, Memphis, Natchez and New Orleans. Where it keeps going is the point.

Texas comes next, with Houston, Austin and two nights across Dallas and Fort Worth, then Amarillo and Cadillac Ranch, Santa Fe, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon. Bryce Canyon is added here, which their shorter crossing skips, and its amphitheatres of hoodoos are worth the detour. Zion, Las Vegas, Death Valley and two nights at Yosemite follow. Then the finish nobody else gets: two nights in San Francisco, a night at Carmel with the 17-Mile Drive, Big Sur and the Pacific Coast Highway to Santa Barbara, and three nights in Los Angeles.

The operator describes a 4,500-mile route; their own daily figures come out nearer 4,900. Twenty-six stops over forty-two nights. The Tioga Pass is open June to October. This itinerary takes a day and a half to price, so there is a fee for a full detailed quote, deducted from the trip cost if you book. It suits anyone with six weeks and the appetite to use all of them.
