14 nights through Portugal
Fourteen nights, self-guided, from Lisboa to Porto, taking in the central Portuguese highlights and some of the lesser-known places on the way. Caminos arranges the hotels and an economy hire car, and the route is one way between the two airports.
Caminos describes a region crammed with World Heritage Sites from beginning to end, crossing several major wine regions with regional cuisine from both the ocean and the land at every stop. The landscape moves from the surf-washed Atlantic coast to the high plains and mountains of the interior and the dramatic Douro gorge, so the days feel quite different from one another.
Lisboa and its surroundings take two nights, with trams, the Manueline monastery of Jeronimos and day trips to Sintra and Cascais. Three nights in the Alto Alentejo cover Evora, the fortress towns of Monsaraz, Marvao and Castelo de Vide, and the marble towns of Vila Vicosa and Estremoz. Estremadura follows with the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaca, Tomar and Obidos. Coimbra takes two nights, then three nights on the Planalto visit fortress towns, Coa Valley rock art and the Douro International Nature Park, before two nights in Porto.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,800 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 14 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
