4 nights through Greece

Four nights in the Peloponnese, flying into Athens, with a BMW supplied by the operator’s local partner. There is no own-bike option on this one, which is the trade for a short trip in good autumn weather.

Athens opens it with a welcome dinner, then the ride out onto the peninsula, which carries more mythology per square mile than anywhere in Europe: Hercules killed the Nemean lion here and the Argonauts sailed from these shores, and the physical remains run from classical temples through Mycenaean palaces to Byzantine cities.

Nafplio gets two nights, a port on the Argolic Gulf that was the first capital of modern Greece, with Venetian and Turkish building in the old town, Syntagma Square, and the Bourtzi fortress on an islet offshore. The roads over Mount Parnonas carry the route there.

A full riding day covers the mountains, with the UNESCO listed Sanctuary of Asklepios, an ancient healing centre where patients slept in the hope of a curative dream, the roads over Mount Taygetus, and the option of the theatre at Epidaurus. The return to Athens closes with a farewell dinner. Hotels, breakfasts, the welcome and farewell dinners, the bike hire, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Four nights is a short commitment for a long weekend stretched at either end, and riding Greece in autumn is a considerably better proposition than riding it in August, when the heat makes a full day in gear genuinely unpleasant.
