9 nights through Nepal
The Extreme tier, and the operator does not pretend otherwise. About 508 kilometres of rough tarmac and gravel from Pokhara up the Kali Gandaki gorge into Upper Mustang, finishing at the walled town of Lo Manthang. He warns about washed-out bridges and landslide-blocked roads, and says plainly that comfort is not the point.
The gorge is the heart of it. The Kali Gandaki runs between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, both over eight thousand metres, which makes it one of the deepest gorges on earth, and the road up it is a mixture of paved sections and track. Thasang village sits beneath Dhaulagiri on the first driving day, then rough paths above 2,800 metres lead to Jomsom, and Muktinath and Kagbeni follow.
The climax is the Marang-La pass at around 4,000 metres and the descent to Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the old Kingdom of Lo, which was closed to outsiders until 1992. A day of tracks around Upper Mustang takes in the Chosar cave dwellings cut into the cliffs. There is a helicopter flight to the Everest region early on and a helicopter return to Kathmandu at the end.
KALMAR provide the vehicle, nine nights’ accommodation, all meals and non-alcoholic drinks, airport transfers, a satellite or GSM data connection, the Lo Manthang and Mustang permits, the sightseeing and both helicopter flights. Flights to Kathmandu and alcohol are separate. The price is per person based on two sharing a car and a double room and assumes twelve participants. The operator says this route had not seen Porsches before.
