Holland Track Itinerary - Britz

The Holland Track runs north from Hyden to Coolgardie as a narrow sand and gravel line through unbroken Western Australian woodland. This six-day loop out of Perth bookends it with two granite landmarks, Wave Rock and Victoria Rock.

5 nights through Australia

Five nights and 1,200 kilometres in a loop from Perth in a 4WD camper, built around the Holland Track.

York and Hyden come first across the Wheatbelt, with Wave Rock near Hyden, a granite face fifteen metres high and a hundred long, undercut and streaked so that it looks like a breaking wave, and the Humps nearby with Aboriginal hand paintings in a rock shelter.

The Holland Track itself was cut in 1893 to get prospectors from the south west to the Coolgardie goldfields, and it survives as a narrow sand and gravel line through unbroken woodland, with Sandalwood Camp along it. Coolgardie at the northern end held many thousands of people during the rush and now holds a few hundred, with the grand public buildings still standing, and Victoria Rock sits in the woodland south of it.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. The track is single-lane with trees close on both sides, so a camper collects its share of scratches, and the operator’s vehicle terms are worth reading on that point before booking. It is dry weather only, since the clay pans along the route hold water for days after rain, and Corrigin closes the loop back into Perth. For a traveller who wants genuine remote driving without leaving the south of the state, this is the one in the range that provides it, and the goldfields history at either end gives the route a point beyond the track itself.
