4 nights through Morocco

Four nights from Marrakech, flying in, with a bike hired locally, and the whole route is on tarmac. It is the short version of the operator’s Morocco tour.

A traditional riad in the medina takes the first night, with a briefing and welcome dinner, then the route climbs through the Middle Atlas foothills to the Cascades d’Ouzoud, the best known waterfalls in the country: around a hundred metres of drop in several stages, with Barbary macaques in the trees above the pools and another riad for the night.

The Atlas crossing follows to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO listed ksar of earthen towers above the Ounila, built to guard the caravan road and used by film studios ever since Lawrence of Arabia. Mud-brick building needs constant repair, which is why the village manages to look both ancient and freshly made.

The Tizi n’Tichka then carries the route back over the High Atlas, the main road south and a long sequence of bends climbing above 2,000 metres, with the descent into Marrakech and a final evening in the medina. The riad and hotels, breakfasts, the welcome dinner, the bike hire, airport transfers, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Four nights is a genuinely short trip, and the point of it is that Marrakech is only a few hours from Britain: this works as a long weekend for a rider who wants the Atlas without the leave or the expense of the longer tours. Anyone wanting the desert and the gorges should look at the fuller Morocco itineraries instead.
