16 nights through Norway

Sixteen nights and around 2,500 miles through Norway, from the overnight ferry out of Harwich up into the Arctic Circle and back. It is the longest and most northerly tour the operator runs.

The route works up the country through fjord and glacier country, staying in traditional Norwegian hotels and using the ferries that stitch the coast together, which are part of the riding rather than an interruption to it: a crossing every day or two, with the bike parked on a car deck and a coffee on the upper one.

The Arctic Circle is the object of the whole thing, and Mo i Rana sits close enough to the line that the midnight sun there is the genuine article rather than a long twilight. Through June and early July the sun does not set at all that far north, which does strange things to the appetite for riding and means a group can be out on empty roads at one in the morning in full daylight.

Two named roads anchor the trip. The Trollstigen climbs a mountainside in eleven hairpins at a gradient of around one in ten, hard against a waterfall. The Atlantic Ocean Road runs for five miles across a string of low islands on eight bridges, the largest of them curved and humped so that it appears from the approach to stop in mid-air. Both are among the finest pieces of road engineering in Europe. Hotels, breakfasts, dinners as listed, the return ferry, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person.
