Pacific Coast Highway Motorcycle Tour

The Pacific Coast Highway is on most riders’ lists, and this self-guided loop builds a full week around it. Seven nights, around 610 miles, which is a short total for eight days and deliberately so: this is a route designed for stopping rather than covering ground.

The ride north is the famous part. Malibu and Oxnard lead to Santa Barbara, then Solvang and Santa Maria, before the coast road continues through Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo to San Simeon, where Hearst Castle sits above the ocean on its hilltop. Days here are only 65 to 100 miles, which leaves whole afternoons free for the beach towns, the pier at Pismo or a long look at the coastline from one of the pull-offs.

Inland is the part people do not expect. The route turns east through the Paso Robles wine country, then crosses the Carrizo Plain, a wide empty grassland that feels nothing like the coast an hour behind. Bakersfield and Taft follow, then Ojai and Santa Paula on the way back to Ventura, and the final morning offers a choice between the coast road and the curves of Mulholland Drive into Los Angeles.
