Precious Dolomites (Self Guided Tour)

Six nights through the Dolomites from Mieming, ridden solo with the routes already loaded and no group to keep pace with. At 1,700 euros it sits alongside the Stelvio trip as the best value in the Edelweiss range.

The Grossglockner High Alpine Road opens it, on the run from Lake Millstatt to Cortina d’Ampezzo. Cortina hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics and sits in a bowl surrounded by pale rock walls, which is as good an introduction to the Dolomites as exists.

The passes come thick after that. The Passo di Giau at 2,236 metres is the pick of them, a long exposed climb with the Marmolada visible across the valley, and the Passo Fedaia runs right beneath the Marmolada glacier itself. The Passo di Pennes follows on the way to Bolzano, then Lienz by way of the Belluno Dolomites, before the return to Mieming. The Dolomites are limestone rather than granite, which is why they go pink at sunset and why the rock faces are vertical in a way the rest of the Alps are not.

Edelweiss include a choice of BMW motorcycle, accommodation at one of three tiers from guest houses to four star superior, and the route materials, with no guide by design. Riding these passes at a self-chosen hour, rather than when a group schedule dictates, is worth a great deal here.
