9 nights through Canada

Nine nights and 1,250 kilometres in a loop from Montreal in a motorhome, in winter, taking in five Quebec ski areas at a deliberately easy pace.

Mont Tremblant comes first in the Laurentians with a stay day, the largest resort in eastern Canada, with a pedestrian village at the base that stays busy after the lifts close, and a mountain that takes a great deal of snow for a hill of its height.

Quebec City follows, worth a day on foot in the snow, then Stoneham just north of it, which is known for its night skiing, and Mont-Sainte-Anne with a stay day, where the trails look out over the frozen St Lawrence. Le Massif de Charlevoix comes next with another, the greatest vertical drop in eastern Canada, dropping towards the river, then Mont Orford in the Eastern Townships before the run back to Montreal.

The motorhome and the day-by-day plan come from CanaDream, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with insurance options priced at booking. Ten days with three stay days makes this the gentler of the two Quebec winter routes in the range, and temperatures around minus ten are normal rather than exceptional. The motorhome needs checking for winter use: not every unit in the fleet is winterised, and the water system, heating and power draw all matter far more in February than in July. Serviced winter sites are fewer than summer ones and want booking. The Quebec resorts generally hold snow from December into April.
