13 nights through India

Fourteen days, guided, on a Royal Enfield 500 Classic through the forts, palaces and desert of Rajasthan.

The operator describes this as a budget-conscious and revised version of its Rajasthan Land of Kings tour, and the page also calls it the Rajasthan on a Shoestring tour. The riding is the same, about 1,930 km at four to six hours a day on desert and paved roads, and the operator rates it as easy. The Royal Enfield 500cc is described as a bike made for the desert, and the support crew follows behind with a mechanic and spares.

The first night is in Delhi, where the group meets over dinner. On day two they leave Delhi by bus to Chandni Midway to pick up the bikes, because the traffic thins out there, and ride on to Mahansar, a slow-moving Rajasthani village. Bikaner is next, with its 16th-century fort and the Karni Mata Temple, home to many rats, then the long ride into the Thar Desert to Jaisalmer, the Golden City, a living fort with a fortress guarding the western side of the state. A short ride to Khuri brings a night in the desert, with the chance to ride camels. The route continues through Jodhpur and Mehrangarh Fort, with its blue houses below, to Ranakpur, the Jain temple of detailed carving, Kumbhalgarh Fort, which the operator says is almost deserted, and Udaipur, the Venice of the East.

The price is per rider and the pillion rate is lower, with a single supplement of US$450. It covers the motorcycle, fuel and spares, three-star twin-sharing hotels, all meals, local and international guides, a support vehicle, crew and mechanic, airport transfers and entrance fees. Flights, visa, insurance and alcohol are extra. An International Driving Permit is required, and the operator says the dates are still to be confirmed.
