14 nights through Portugal
Fourteen nights, self-guided, through Las Beiras and Estremadura, together known as the Centro de Portugal. Caminos arranges the hotels and an economy hire car, and the route runs from the Art Nouveau seaside town of Aveiro to the Dao wine capital of Viseu.
The trip moves from coast to mountains and on to the frontier. Caminos describes the Atlantic coast near Estremadura, the awe-inspiring religious architecture of Batalha, Alcobaca and Tomar, then a climb into the Serra da Estrela and across the Planalto, where historic fortress towns sit at the border with Spain. Viseu and its wines close the loop.
Two nights in Aveiro include a ride on a Moliceiro boat, the painted houses of Costa Nova do Prado and the Vista Alegre porcelain factory. Coimbra takes two nights, with the university, fado and the Roman ruins at Conimbriga. Three nights in Estremadura cover Batalha, Alcobaca, Tomar, Obidos and the Sierras de Aire y Candeeiros Nature Park. Two nights in the Serra da Estrela include the Burel wool factory at Manteigas and the Torre peak. Three nights on the Planalto visit Trancoso, Almeida and Castelo Rodrigo, then two nights in Viseu follow the Dao wine route.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,750 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 14 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
