7 nights through Slovenia

Seven nights through Slovenia, self-guided, from the Soca Valley to Lake Bled, arranged with a family in mind.

Five nights in one place at the start is the unusual part and the right call: Pristava Lepena is a collection of traditional mountain chalets in Triglav National Park, and the activities come to the guest rather than the other way round.

The Soca is the draw there, an emerald-green river fast enough for rafting, kayaking and canoeing, with canyoning, Lipizzaner riding, cycling and the alpine botanical garden at Trenta nearby, and fishing for the marbled trout, which lives only in the River Nadiza. The car then goes onto a train through the mountains, from Most-na-Soci to Bohinjska Bistrica, which is a drive-on service through the tunnels and a novelty in itself. Lake Bled follows for two nights at the Grand Hotel Toplice, which dates from the mid-nineteenth century when the hot springs first drew visitors, with thermal baths, a private beach and boathouse, and the castle and summer toboggan run nearby.

The hire car throughout, the accommodation and daily breakfast are included; flights, the train tickets, the activities, the fuel, additional insurances and most meals are all payable locally or separately, so the headline price covers rather less than it appears to. The price shown is per person sharing. June to September is the season for the river. Eight days at this price is the cheapest thing Red Savannah sells by a wide margin, and Slovenia is the reason: a small country with alps, a national park and a lake all within two hours of the airport, and prices that have not yet caught up with the scenery.
