Garden Route: South Africa
Watch two oceans meet at the very tip of the continent, then a few days later go looking for elephants on a game drive – fourteen nights along South Africa’s Garden Route.
Tell us your trip details and we'll put together a complimentary Stradora Expedition Pack for the journey.
14 nights through South Africa
Fourteen nights in a loop from Cape Town, flying in, with a bike hired locally, and at just under seven thousand pounds it is the most expensive tour in the operator’s range.
Cape Town opens it with a free day, then the route runs south to the Cape of Good Hope at the southwestern tip of the continent, and the penguin colony at Boulders Beach, which has grown from two breeding pairs in the early 1980s to a permanent resident population and sits on a public beach.
The Garden Route follows, the coastal stretch between Mossel Bay and the Storms River that takes its name from the lakes, lagoons and indigenous forest along it, with the Outeniqua mountains inland. The Little Karoo comes next, and its passes are the riding highlight of the trip: dry, empty roads built through sandstone ranges in the nineteenth century, several of them by the engineer Thomas Bain, and nothing whatever like the coast an hour away.
The Eastern Cape reserves follow, with game drives in Addo Elephant National Park, founded in 1931 to save eleven surviving elephants and now holding several hundred along with buffalo, zebra and a great deal else, though no sighting can be promised. UNESCO sites are visited along the way, and the return crosses the Stellenbosch winelands to Cape Town, where the vineyards date from the 1680s and the mountain backdrop does most of the work. Hotels, breakfasts, dinners as listed, the bike hire, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person.
