5 nights through Australia

Five nights and 509 kilometres from Adelaide to Wallaroo in a campervan, round the Yorke Peninsula.

Port Vincent and Stansbury come first on the eastern side, looking back across Gulf St Vincent, in a stretch of small jetty towns where fishing is still the main business.

Marion Bay follows at the foot of the peninsula, then Dhilba Guuranda-Innes National Park, which is the point of the trip: a southern tip of limestone cliffs and surf beaches, with the Inneston ghost town, a gypsum mining settlement abandoned in 1930 and left standing. The Ethel Beach wreck lies in the sand nearby, a sailing ship driven ashore in 1904 whose frames still show at low tide. Port Hughes, Moonta and Wallaroo close the route on the north west coast, the copper towns worked by Cornish miners from the 1860s, which is why the local pasty is taken as seriously as it is.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Six days for 509 kilometres is among the gentlest itineraries in the range, with short legs and time to fish, swim or do nothing at all. The peninsula also stays quiet outside the South Australian school holidays, which is when its campsites fill, and the water on the eastern side is calm enough for children. Yorke Peninsula is also the best blue swimmer crab country in the state, and the jetties along the gulf are public, which makes dinner a cheap proposition.
