4 nights through Spain

Four nights through Andalucia’s cities, flying into Malaga, point to point rather than from a single base, with a BMW supplied by the local partner and no own-bike option.

A Parador hotel and a welcome dinner open it, then the mountain roads of the Sierra de las Nieves to Ronda, which sits on a cliff split by the El Tajo gorge and is crossed by the eighteenth-century Puente Nuevo, a bridge that took some forty years to build. The bullring there is among the oldest in Spain and the one Hemingway wrote about.

The Sierra de Grazalema follows on the way to Seville, and the Plaza de Espana in the Parque de Maria Luisa is the stop: a semicircular colonnade built for the 1929 exposition and familiar from more films than most buildings manage. Dinner is late and taken as tapas, as it should be.

Cordoba comes next, with the hotel near the Mezquita, which began as an early Christian site, became the great mosque of the western caliphate, and now has a cathedral inserted into the middle of its forest of striped arches, all of it beside the Guadalquivir. The return to Malaga runs through Velez-Malaga on narrow twisting roads, with a final dinner and a bottle of Rioja. Hotels, breakfasts, the welcome and final dinners, the bike hire, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Four nights and three cities is a brisk way to see the best of Andalucia, and the roads between them are a good deal better than the motorway most visitors take.
