9 nights through Spain

Nine nights through the Picos de Europa, Asturias, Galicia and the Douro, with the overnight ferry from Plymouth at each end, and this is the operator’s premium riders’ tour. Own bike or a hired BMW.

Santander lands it and the route goes straight into the Picos, a limestone range rising to 2,600 metres within twenty miles of the sea, with the first night in a small mountain village. A full day of Picos and Asturian riding follows into Galicia, to a secluded hotel with a jacuzzi and steam room, which is a reasonable way to end a hard day in the saddle.

Portugal comes next through Peneda-Geres, the only national park in the country, to a working quinta on the Douro for two nights. There is an optional 200 mile loop through the Douro International natural park, and a guided tasting and vineyard tour at Peso da Regua, in the oldest demarcated wine region in the world.

The return crosses back into Spain on flowing mountain roads to a Parador, then western Asturias, then deep into the Picos again for a final Parador and the farewell dinner, before the Cantabrian mountains and the evening ferry at Santander. Hotels, breakfasts, three dinners, the return ferry, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Northern Spain and northern Portugal have some of the best surfaced mountain roads in Europe and a fraction of the Alpine traffic on them, and the Paradors are state-run hotels in historic buildings, which raises the standard of the overnights well above the usual.
