Portugal and the Picos Mountains
The shrine that pilgrims have been walking toward for a thousand years comes first, before settling in a few days later at a wine estate in the heart of the Douro – nine nights through northern Spain and Portugal’s vineyard country.

9 nights through Spain
Nine nights through the Picos de Europa, Galicia and the Douro, with the overnight ferry from the UK at each end, on a route the operator’s own tour leaders rate among the best riding they have done. Own bike or a hired BMW.
Northern Spain lands it and the route goes straight to the Picos for two nights in an old stone hotel in a remote mountain village, with a choice of circular routes on empty winding roads. The Picos reward that approach: the range is compact, the passes are many, and almost nobody else is on them.
The route then runs west through the national park to a Parador, and past the Sierra do Xistral to Santiago de Compostela, UNESCO listed, where the shrine of St James has drawn pilgrims for a thousand years and still draws several hundred thousand of them a year on foot.
Portugal follows, south into hill country through vineyard after vineyard to a quinta in the heart of the Douro, which has been making port since the eighteenth century on terraces cut by hand into schist. The return works back through Salamanca and Leon, with more riding in the Picos over the final days before the ferry. Hotels, breakfasts, three dinners, the return ferry, maps and GPS routes are included, with fuel and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. This and the operator’s Picos and Asturias tour cover similar ground differently, so the choice comes down to whether Santiago or the Asturian coast appeals more.
