3 nights through Finland

Four days of ice driving in Finnish Lapland, on the site of a former iron mine near Kolari, with more than 25 kilometres of frozen lakes, rally roads and ice tracks to use. The cars are rally-prepared Porsches, air and water-cooled, on proper studded rally tyres.

The numbers are what make it work. One instructor per car, and no more than five cars on site at any time, which means the ice is effectively yours and the tuition is one to one rather than a queue at a cone. Two full days are spent driving, starting at whatever level you arrive at.

There are two ways to take it. Arctic Control is the straightforward version, building car control on the ice at your own pace. Arctic Race adds timed competition and night driving, which on a frozen lake in a Lapland winter is a particular kind of experience. An extra advanced day can be added on the end for anyone not ready to stop.

This is a single-venue driving programme rather than a road journey, and it is listed on that basis. KALMAR provide an instructor per car plus mechanics and a support team, a personal shuttle, a private lodge or villa, all meals and all non-alcoholic drinks. Flights, alcohol and the extra Arctic activities such as snowmobiling, husky or reindeer sledding are separate. The price is per person based on two sharing. For a driver who wants to learn what oversteer actually feels like, with no consequences beyond a snowbank, a frozen lake is the best classroom there is.
