11 nights through Sri Lanka
Eleven nights in a loop from Colombo, guided, 1,200 kilometres around Sri Lanka on a Royal Enfield.
Kalpitiya comes first up the west coast, a lagoon and sandbar peninsula, then Sigiriya in the dry zone, where a fifth-century king built a palace on top of a two-hundred-metre rock and left frescoes and a gateway carved as a lion’s paws behind him.
Kandy follows, the last capital of the Sinhalese kings, holding the tooth relic of the Buddha, with the Knuckles Range beyond it, a world heritage massif of cloud forest and tea. Ella comes next in the hill country, reached on roads that climb through plantations with the train line crossing overhead, then a safari at Udawalawe National Park, which has a large resident elephant population, though nothing can be promised on any given drive. Tangalle on the south coast follows, then Galle, a Dutch fortified town on a headland with the ramparts intact, and the run back up to Colombo.
Accommodation in inns, plantations and hotels in single or double rooms, the airport transfers, the Royal Enfield, all the meals, two professional guides, first aid, a chase vehicle with a driver, mechanic, tools and spares, all the fees and permits, the drinking water and the extras including the Lion Rock climb, the Udawalawe safari and the night in Galle are all included; the Sri Lanka visa, flights, medical insurance, gratuities, alcohol and any damage to the motorcycle are not. The full day-by-day itinerary sits behind an enquiry form on the operator’s site. December to March suits the south and west coasts best.
