The Resplendent Jewel of the East: Sri Lanka UltraLux

The UltraLux edition: the same 1,200-kilometre loop past Sigiriya’s rock fortress and Ella’s hills, with Yala National Park’s Big Cat safari swapped in for Udawalawe – thirteen nights of Sri Lanka at its most indulgent.

13 nights through Sri Lanka

Thirteen nights in a loop from Colombo, 1,200 kilometres around Sri Lanka on a new-model Royal Enfield, in the operator’s ultra-luxury edition.

The route is the same one as the standard Sri Lanka tour and almost everything else is different. Every stop is a two-night stay in one of the best hotels in the country, the group is capped at ten, and the safari is at Yala rather than Udawalawe, which has the highest leopard density anywhere, though no sighting can be promised.

Sigiriya comes first in the dry zone, where a fifth-century king built a palace on a two-hundred-metre rock, then Kandy, the last Sinhalese capital, holding the tooth relic of the Buddha. Ella follows in the hill country among the tea, then Yala on the southern plains, and Galle, a Dutch fortified town on a headland with its ramparts intact. The second nights are given over to spa sessions, yoga, cooking classes and cultural tours rather than riding.

One-to-one concierge service, suites in single or double occupancy, limousine airport transfers, the Royal Enfield, all the meals at the best restaurants, a language-matched guide, first aid, mechanics and a support vehicle, a second van for non-riding companions, the off-day activities, all the fees and permits including the Sri Lankan driving permit, the soft drinks, tea and coffee and branded merchandise are all included; the visa, flights, medical insurance, gratuities and alcohol are not. The full day-by-day itinerary sits behind an enquiry form on the operator’s site. December to March suits the south and west coasts best. This is the most expensive tour in the range by a wide margin, and the companion van is the detail that explains who it is for.
