7 nights through Portugal
Seven nights, self-guided, in the north of Portugal, with an economy hire car and hotels arranged by Caminos. The page describes it as a one-week tour of the wild Atlantic coastline, the ancient Douro vineyards and the cities of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Braga and Guimaraes.
Caminos points to four UNESCO World Heritage sites in the region, historic manor houses and mansions among the vineyards, and well-preserved old towns. Port is the obvious wine, but the page also recommends the table wines now made in the Douro and in the Vinho Verde region, with hearty local food and a warm welcome wherever the route stops.
Two nights in Porto begin the trip, covering the Ribeira, the Dom Luis I bridge and the port wine lodges, with museums and a ferry to Afurada. Two nights on the Minho coast follow, taking in Caminha, the fortress towns of Valenca, Moncao and Melgaco on the Minho river, Viana do Castelo and the Roman bridge at Ponte de Lima, with Vinho Verde tasting on the way. The last three nights are in the Douro Valley, with a boat trip, the World Heritage vineyards, Amarante and the famous stairway at Lamego. The page lists Braga and Guimaraes among the region’s cities.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,150 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 7 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
