7 nights through Spain
Seven nights, self-guided, through southern Catalonia, with an economy hire car and hotels arranged by Caminos. The page describes the tour as compact and slow-paced, with frequent low-cost flights to Reus or Barcelona.
This is the foodie version of the region. Caminos suggests tasting cava, the fine wines of the Priorat and the rice dishes of the Delta del Ebro, with spectacular scenery and birdwatching in the Els Ports and Delta del Ebro national parks, and hiking among the vines. The Costa Dorada beaches are never far away, and Tarragona’s Roman remains and Catalan Modernist architecture add a cultural strand.
Two nights in the Alt Penedes, the home of cava, take in the Modernista cathedrals of wine, the castellers who build human towers, and coastal stops at Sitges or Altafulla. Two nights follow in the Ebro Delta and Tortosa, with birdwatching, rice and locally caught seafood, Miravet upriver and cycling on the Via Verde. The last three nights are in the Priorat and Montsant wine region and the Costa Dorada, with Siurana, La Cartoixa de Scala Dei, walks and cycle rides among the vines and a trip to Reus or Roman Tarragona.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,100 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 7 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
