Heroes of the Mekong (Thailand/Laos)

A road ranked in the global top ten for pure riding pleasure crosses into Laos on the same trip, monks collecting alms at dawn before the road switches sides twice more – eleven nights across two countries and one very good highway.

11 nights through Thailand

Eleven nights in a loop from Chiang Mai, guided, across the border into Laos as far as Vientiane, rated easy by the operator.

Nan comes first by way of Phayao, with a waterfall, hot springs and the lake, and Highway 1148, which turns up in global top ten lists of the most enjoyable roads to ride and deserves the place.

Laos follows at Xayaboury, through two national parks and the salt mines at Bo Kluea, with a visa on arrival and a switch to driving on the right. Luang Prabang comes next on a mountain road and across the Mekong, with the Kuang Si falls and their turquoise pools, and a rest day for the former royal palace, Wat Xieng Thong and the three hundred and twenty-nine steps up Mount Phousi for the sunset. The monks still collect alms along the main street at dawn. Vang Vieng follows among limestone karst, with the Tham Jang cave, then Vientiane, with the Patuxai monument and Wat Sisaket, before the return to Thailand.

The bike hire is included, with a choice that runs from a BMW G310GS to a Kawasaki Versys 650; the full inclusions are not itemised on the operator’s page and are worth confirming at booking. The price shown is per person sharing. The cool dry season from November to February is the window. Twelve days rated easy, on sealed road and at a relaxed pace, makes this the gentlest thing the operator sells, and Luang Prabang alone would justify the crossing.
