9 nights through Australia

Nine nights and 2,250 kilometres from Darwin to Broome in a campervan, on sealed road the whole way, which puts the Kimberley within reach of a 2WD.

Kakadu comes first, then Katherine and Nitmiluk, where thirteen gorges are cut through sandstone by the Katherine River and are best seen by canoe or by boat.

Kununurra follows across the Western Australian border, with Lake Argyle beside it holding many times the water of Sydney Harbour and a boat trip out among the freshwater crocodiles. Halls Creek comes next, the jumping-off point for Purnululu and the Bungle Bungle range: the access track there is 4WD only, so from a sealed-road itinerary it means a scenic flight or a tour rather than a drive. Fitzroy Crossing and Geikie Gorge follow before Broome and Cable Beach.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Staying on the bitumen is the whole proposition here, and it works: the big sights are all reachable, with the Bungle Bungles taken by air instead of by track. Ten days for 2,250 kilometres leaves reasonable time at each stop. The season still governs, since the wet closes roads and parks regardless of what is being driven. For a traveller who wants the Kimberley without committing to corrugations, punctures and river crossings, this is the itinerary that delivers it, and the money saved on the vehicle covers the flight over Purnululu.
