5 nights through Thailand
Five nights from Chiang Mai, guided, round the Mae Hong Son loop and its 1,864 curves, with a complimentary extra hotel night.
The loop is the best known motorcycle road in Asia: 1,864 bends by the official count along a three-hundred-kilometre stretch of the southern Himalayan foothills, and the reason most riders come to northern Thailand.
Pai comes first by way of Mae Taeng, a riverside town with a night market and a long-standing travellers’ population. Mae Hong Son follows, with the hilltop temple of Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu looking down over the valley, then Mae Sariang on the border road, with Pai Canyon and its narrow ridges along the way. The final day climbs Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand at just over 2,500 metres, with a sealed road to the summit, before the run back into Chiang Mai and a farewell dinner.
The motorcycle, the fuel, the hotels on a twin-sharing basis at three and four-star standard, breakfast, lunch and dinner with soft drinks, all the riding gear, third-party liability insurance, a licensed guide, a chase vehicle carrying a spare motorcycle, the national park and site entrance fees and airport transfers for groups of four or more are all included; motorcycle health and CDW insurance, the security deposit, alcohol, flights, visas and suggested tips are not. The price shown is for one rider. The cool dry season from November to February is the window, since the burning season in March and April fills the valleys with smoke. The extra night at the start is a sensible touch for anyone arriving off a long flight, and at under eight hundred kilometres over four riding days this is the gentlest way to do the loop properly.
