6 nights through Italy

Tuscany on a Vespa from a single base, which is the correct way to do it. Six nights in one Florence hotel and a different loop out into the hills each day, so there is no luggage to shift and no hurry to be anywhere.

San Gimignano is the first draw, a hill town bristling with medieval tower houses that has been called Medieval Manhattan for obvious reasons. Chianti follows, which is as much about the roads between the vineyards as the wine, and then Siena, where the Palio horse race has been run around the Piazza del Campo twice a summer for centuries.

Arezzo comes next, an Etruscan town long before it was a Roman or Tuscan one, and now the centre of the Italian jewellery trade. The Mugello loop will appeal to a particular sort of visitor, since the MotoGP circuit sits in those hills. The final day offers a choice between the train to Pisa and the Leaning Tower, or a ride into the Arno valley for an olive oil tasting, and both are optional extras rather than part of the price.

Edelweiss include the Vespa, six nights at the single Florence hotel, the guided daily rides and a tour book. Flights are separate, as are the two final-day excursions. Prices are per person for 2026. A scooter is slow, which on Tuscan ridge roads between hill towns is exactly right, and basing the whole week in Florence means the evenings are as good as the days.
