8 nights through Australia

Eight nights and 738 kilometres from Perth to Albany in a campervan, in nine short legs, most of them under two hours, which is what makes this the family itinerary.

Bunbury and Busselton come first, then Yallingup and the Ngilgi Cave, a limestone cavern found in 1899 and the first show cave in the state, with stalactites and shawl formations lit throughout.

Prevelly and Margaret River follow, then Hamelin Bay, where stingrays come into the shallows beside the old boat ramp and can be watched from the sand, and Augusta at the southwestern corner, where the Indian and Southern oceans are said to meet below the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. Pemberton comes next in the karri forest, then Walpole and the Valley of the Giants, where a treetop walk runs forty metres up in the canopy of tingle trees, and Peaceful Bay before Albany.

Britz supply the camper and the day-by-day plan, and the hire is priced live per vehicle rather than per person; campsites, fuel, ferries, park fees and activities are all extra, with a nil-excess insurance pack available at booking. Nine days for 738 kilometres means almost no long drives, and every stop has either a beach, a cave or a forest walk, which holds a wide age range. The caves and the treetop walk are the two things worth timing early in the day. Everything is sealed, so a standard camper handles the whole route. This is a one-way hire finishing at Albany, so the return to Perth needs either a relocation or a flight, and a relocation fee is worth checking at booking.
