20 nights through United States

Twenty nights and eight states across the American west, flying in and hiring a bike from the operator’s local BMW partner. It is three weeks of the kind of distances that only make sense in that part of the world.

The later stages are the ones the operator sets out in detail, and they are the famous ones. A section of Historic Route 66 in Arizona comes first, on the alignment that carried a generation west before the interstates replaced it, then the Hoover Dam, built through the depression years and still holding back one of the largest reservoirs in the United States.

Las Vegas follows for the Strip and the casinos, which is either a highlight or an endurance test depending on the rider, then Death Valley, where the floor of Badwater Basin lies 86 metres below sea level and is the lowest ground in North America, and where the highest air temperatures ever reliably recorded have been measured.

Santa Barbara comes next on the beachfront, then the Pacific Coast Highway north to Big Sur, where the road runs on ledges and bridges between the mountains and the sea for ninety miles with no settlement worth the name, and finally San Francisco, with a ride across the Golden Gate before the bikes go back. The bike hire, hotels, breakfasts and the dinners listed are included, with fuel, flights and other meals separate. The price is quoted per person. Riders should expect long days in the saddle and a great deal of heat through the desert sections.
