Swiss Wonder

Most trips to the Swiss Alps begin with a long motorway slog. This one begins with dinner in Vienna and a sleeper train. Cars are loaded onto the ÖBB Nightjet overnight to Feldkirch, so the driving starts where the good roads do rather than four hundred kilometres short of them.

From Feldkirch the route crosses the Tremola, the old cobbled road over the San Gottardo that the modern tunnel replaced, into Andermatt. Two nights there are spent at The Chedi, and the day in between is the reason to book: a single loop taking in the Furka, Grimsel, Susten and Oberalp passes, four of the finest alpine roads in Switzerland, ridden or driven one after the other. The Furka is the one with the Rhone glacier and a James Bond history.

The return crosses the Klausen Pass back to Feldkirch, and the Nightjet carries the cars home overnight again. Five days in total, four nights, two of them on a train, and no motorway driving at either end.

Go Beyond includes the two nights at The Chedi Andermatt with breakfast and dinner, two nights in sleeper cabins, the car transport by train in both directions, the train tickets with light breakfast, secure private parking, maps and car stickers. No other journey in the catalogue uses the sleeper train this way, and for anyone bringing a car they care about it solves the worst part of the trip.
