12 nights through India
Twelve nights from Delhi through Ladakh, guided, 1,200 kilometres on a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 over some of the highest roads in the world.
Flights carry the group from Delhi to Leh at 3,500 metres, where the first days are spent acclimatising, which is not a formality: altitude sickness is the main reason Ladakh trips go wrong and the schedule is built around avoiding it.
Lamayuru comes first, a monastery above a valley of eroded ridges that looks like nothing on earth and is usually described as a moonscape, then Namra and back to Leh. Khardung La follows, one of the highest motorable passes anywhere at over 5,300 metres, dropping into the Nubra Valley and Hunder, where sand dunes and double-humped camels sit between snow peaks. Chang La leads to Sakti and the Pangong Tso lakeshore, and Tanglang La to Tso Moriri, a high-altitude lake at 4,500 metres with very little around it.
Accommodation in inns and hotels in single or double rooms, the return flights from Delhi to Leh, the airport transfers, the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, all the meals, two professional guides, first aid, a chase vehicle with a driver, mechanic, tools and spares, all the fees and permits and the drinking water are all included; the India visa, international flights, medical insurance, gratuities, alcohol and any damage to the motorcycle are not. The full day-by-day itinerary sits behind an enquiry form on the operator’s site. The season runs from roughly June to September, since the passes are under snow the rest of the year, and anyone with a heart or lung condition should take medical advice before booking.
