7 nights through Italy
The French half of the Alps and Dolomites route, guided. Eight days from Milan back to Treviglio, seven nights and around 810 miles, with a tour leader, a welcome dinner in Milan and a farewell dinner among the Barolo vineyards.
Lake Maggiore opens the trip on an easy ride to Aosta, and then the great passes start arriving in quick succession. The Piccolo San Bernardo crosses into France, then the Col de l’Iseran at over 9,000 feet, the highest paved pass in the Alps, followed by the Col du Telegraphe, the Col du Galibier and the Col du Lautaret on the way to Les Deux Alpes.
Provence follows, and with it the Gorges du Verdon, a limestone canyon 2,300 feet deep with a road running along its rim, approached past the turquoise water of Lake Saint Croix. The Route des Cretes and the Route Napoleon lead through Castellane to Grasse above Cannes, then the Col della Lombarda carries the route back into Italy and down into the Langhe hills, where Barolo and Barbaresco are made, before the final run through Monferrato.
EAGLERIDER provides the motorcycle, the tour leader, all seven nights and the group dinners. Fuel, most meals and insurance are separate, and prices are quoted in US dollars. Daily distances run from 59 to 163 miles, so there is time at the top of each pass. For riders who want the French Alps led rather than self-navigated, with a serious wine region to finish in, this is the half to book.
