14 nights through Portugal
Fourteen nights, self-guided, on the Portuguese Way, which Caminos describes as one of the shortest and perhaps the prettiest of the pilgrims’ routes to Santiago de Compostela. It runs from Lisboa to Galicia, with hotels and an economy hire car arranged.
The route stays never far from the Atlantic coast, with rolling scenery in central and northern Portugal and Galicia as a backdrop. Caminos counts nine World Heritage sites along the way and calls it a food tour not to be missed, with wine at every stage from the Alentejo to the Douro, Ribeira and Albarino.
Three nights in Lisboa begin the trip, with the trams, Jeronimos and Sintra close by. Estremadura follows for two nights, with the monasteries of Batalha and Alcobaca, the Templar convent at Tomar and Obidos. Coimbra takes two nights, with its university, fado and the Roman ruins at Conimbriga. Three nights in Porto lead north to Santiago de Compostela for two nights, with a guided walking tour of the cathedral city. The route closes with two nights on the Minho coast, in Caminha, the fortress towns on the border, Viana do Castelo and Ponte de Lima.
The price covers hotels on a bed and breakfast basis for two sharing a double room, an economy four-door hire car for those flying, a regional guide book and a personal travel app with restaurant suggestions and weather forecasts, and instructions for finding every hotel. Flights, one-way and cross-border car hire charges, extras such as a second driver, garage parking and local tourist taxes are not included. Caminos quotes about £1,800 per person as an indicative mid-season figure for 14 nights, and adapts the route, hotels and airports to each traveller.
