25 nights through Australia

You leave Alice Springs heading west on the Beadell tracks – the Sandy Blight, the Gunbarrel Highway, the Gary and the Talawana – long, isolated lines cut across spinifex country. Days are measured in corrugations and dune crests. You camp at Warakurna Roadhouse, and at Giles Meteorological Station you watch the daily weather balloon go up into an empty sky.

Then the land breaks open into the Pilbara, all red gorges and national parks, before the road runs out at the Ningaloo coast.

Ningaloo

Three nights at Yardie Creek Homestead put you within reach of Ningaloo Reef. You can snorkel the coral straight off the beach in turquoise water, with the option to swim with whale sharks. A night at Bullara Station follows, with dinner at The Table.

The way back

The return leg runs east through more national parks and desert, a different road home to Alice Springs. The journey ends where it began, at the Desert Palms, with a final dinner at Lasseter’s.

How it works

This is a tag-along expedition in your own vehicle. Tony, a full-time guide and 4WD instructor, leads every tour in a Land Cruiser 79 Series carrying a winch, recovery gear, Starlink and a Garmin inReach. Radio guidance runs throughout, with warnings about traffic and hazards ahead. Evenings bring night spotlighting sessions, with animal and bird ID books to hand.

Groups are limited to eight vehicles, with no children under 16. Trailers are allowed only with approval. The price is per vehicle for up to two people. Camping fees, national park fees and Aboriginal land permits are arranged for you, along with your first and last nights in Alice Springs. Fuel, most food and camping gear are yours to bring.

Is it for you?

The Gunbarrel, Gary and Talawana are heavily corrugated, the dunes are hard on suspension and tight scrub is hard on paintwork. You need a fully equipped, well-prepared high-clearance 4WD with low range, heavy-duty suspension and spare shocks, six LT-rated tyres, an 800 km fuel range and 50 to 80 litres of water, plus a mechanic’s sign-off before you leave.
