8 nights through Italy

The Dolomites and the Prosecco hills, guided, with one of Italy’s strangest roads on the way out. Nine days from Treviglio, eight nights and around 690 miles, with a tour leader, guided day rides, a welcome dinner and a farewell dinner.

Lake Iseo and the Western Gardesana road open it to Riva del Garda, then the Rolle Pass, the Forcella Aurine and the Giau Pass climb into the UNESCO Dolomites at Cortina d’Ampezzo, which gets a full guided day ride of its own. Val Badia follows by way of the Cimebanche Pass and the pale water of Braies Lake, and a second guided day covers the Gardena, Sella and Pordoi passes, which between them are about as good as European motorcycling gets.

The San Boldo Pass is the one nobody forgets. Eighteen hairpins and six tunnels are carved through solid rock on a road the Austro-Hungarian army built in a hundred days during the First World War, hence its nickname. It drops the route into Valdobbiadene and the Prosecco wine road, where a group toast is laid on before the return to Treviglio.

EAGLERIDER provides the motorcycle, the tour leader, all eight nights and the group dinners. Fuel, most meals and insurance are arranged separately, and prices are quoted in US dollars. Daily distances are short, 62 to 157 miles, with two days spent entirely on day rides. For a guided week of hairpins, high passes and good wine, this is probably the most enjoyable thing on the whole list.
