Western Australia’s coast runs for thousands of kilometres with almost nobody on it. This guided tour follows it north from Perth for 4,146 kilometres and fifteen days, then turns inland across the Kimberley to the Top End.
The first stretch north is reef and gorge country. The Pinnacles come early, a field of limestone spires standing in yellow sand, then the Murchison gorges at Kalbarri where the river has cut deep into red rock. Shark Bay follows, and then Ningaloo Reef and Cape Range, where the coral sits close enough to the beach to swim out to and whale sharks pass through in season.
Broome is roughly the halfway point, and a reasonable place to stop looking at the clock for a day. Beyond it the route crosses the Kimberley, which is one of the least populated places anywhere on earth, before reaching Katherine, then Kakadu and finally Darwin. This is genuinely remote riding, and the tour is graded as an expedition for good reason.
