5 nights through United Kingdom

Five nights through the Scottish Highlands, escorted, in the guest’s own classic, with two nights on Skye and a distillery tasting.

The numbered roundels are a small touch that tells you what sort of tour this is: a convoy with a lead car and a tour director, where the order is known, nobody gets lost, and the driving is sociable rather than solitary.

The Dakota Hotel at Motherwell is the start. Loch Lomond comes first, then Glen Coe, a glacial valley walled by the Three Sisters and among the most dramatic pieces of road in Britain, and Fort William beneath Ben Nevis. Loch Ness and Inverness follow, then Speyside, where the greatest concentration of malt distilleries anywhere supplies the included tour and tasting. Balmoral, Glenshee, Pitlochry and Loch Earn carry the route south, with two nights on Skye in the middle, reached by the included ferry crossing, and the tour finishes in Perthshire.

Five nights in four-star hotels, a welcome dinner, breakfast daily, lunch on three days and dinner on four evenings, a detailed itinerary, a route map, the car roundels, the Skye ferry, the distillery tour and tasting and a tour director with a lead car are all included; fuel, travel insurance and the meals not listed were not stated and are worth confirming. Late spring to early autumn is the window, and May or September are the picks of it: the roads are clear, the light is long and the midges on the west coast are at their least troublesome. Six days with two nights on Skye is a well-judged shape, since Skye deserves more than a passing night.
